Two capital cities (Beijing, Hangzhou)
and China’s financial capital (Shanghai)
Beijing has been China’s capital city for more than 600 years; Hangzhou was its capital for 150 years in the 12th and 13th Centuries. Shanghai has grown in importance over the last 150 years, and particularly in the last 25 it has overshadowed Hong Kong as the financial center for the region. Read an overview of this program.
Day 1 - Depart LAX for Beijing, via Shanghai, leaving at 1:30 PM (seat selection begins at 10:30 AM. The 13 hour flight arrives in Shanghai at 6:30 PM. Transfer to Beijing at 9: 30 P.M.
Day 2 - and our transfer flight arrives in Beijing at 11:30 PM.
Day 3 (BLD) - We have a very full day of cultural experiences including the Imperial Palace (Forbidden City), a 175 acre walled and moated complex of 9,999 rooms and meeting halls, Tien An Men square which has held more than 1,000,000 people, and the beautiful Summer Palace (built to its present splendor by Dowager Empress Cixi, using funds slated for the navy). Evening includes a sampling of Chinese traditional performing arts at Laoshe Tea House.
Day 4 (BLD) - Travel north of Beijing to the Great Wall, unified 2,200 years ago across 4,000 miles and rebuilt in the 1600s. We visit the campus of a leading university in the afternoon to learn about education in China and enjoy a Beijing specialty for dinner: Peking Duck.
Day 5 (BLD) - After our transfer flight to Shanghai, we visit the outstanding and modern Shanghai Museum. Late afternoon we will be transferred by bus to Hangzhou.
Day 6 (BLD) - We cruise beautiful West Lake which once bordered the imperial buildings of Song Dynasty China. Next, we travel to a tea farm where Dragon Well Tea is produced and visit a silk factory (to understand two of Hangzhou’s chief and enduring industries). This evening enjoy a historically inspired cultural performance at the Song cultural village.
Day 7 (BLD ) – In the morning,we drive through developing suburbs and rice paddies to Shanghai, China’s financial and economic center. In the afternoon, we enjoy “old Shanghai” and its many shops and beautiful Yu Yuan a garden built several centuries ago. After dinner, we walk the riverside Bund, once the German Concession, and, if time, famous Nanjing Road retail area.
Day 8 (BL) - In the morning we visit the Pudong Economic Development Zone, then learn about the economic miracle transformation of an old fishing village into a world financial center. We depart for LAX after lunch, leaving at 2:30 PM and arriving the same calendar day at 11:30 AM (12 hours).
This CCE China guided trip includes international airfare from LAX, airline taxes, fees and fuel surcharges, tour guides and drivers, six nights in a 4 star hotel (double occupancy), all meals and sightseeing as indicated, for only $1,599. Tips and Visa are not included: tip drivers $1.50-$2/day and guides $2.50-$3/day for good service. Your Chinese visa ($75 if we arrange it) and tips for baggage transfers ($1/event) are extra. Applications
Your application must be accompanied by a valid passport (good through 2010).
We urge you to submit a Visa application (and picture), and $75 check for the visa (made out to Council on China Exchange as part of or in addition to your payment for the travel seminar), at the same time.
We recommend that you send us all your materials via Certified Mail to ensure timely delivery.
To apply, submit this application and payment in full to your counselor/teacher or directly to CCE China no later then 60 days prior to departure.
